The city of Volterra is both large and dangerous. Full of both those that have beating hearts...and those without. It is a time of great fortune for the ancient family of vampires, the Volturi, that live in Italy, out of humankind's knowledge. Changes have occurred in the recent times. A new rise in power has made itself evident and alliances are being made. The rules are slowly changing as the vampires are being persuaded to choose either the killing of humans or that of animals...to sustain their blood lust. Will the time of great prosperity continue? Or will it be lost forever?
Volterra is a small city within Tuscany, Italy. It is extremely old, dating back to the Etruscan period. Made mainly of stone, brick, and marble, this roman-like city is a gem set into the Tuscan Plain. It is surrounded by a large wall and sits on the edge of a cliff. Plus, it is infested with vampires.
Many years ago, it was believed that Aro met a human girl. She was strange in her way of thinking and much to wise for someone her age. Her dark, brooding eyes intrigued him into wanting to see her as something else. Something much less...human. So, without the consent of his two companions, he turned her. But something was not right about the way she changed.
She did not feel pain. She did not suffer through it...instead her body embraced it. She let the venom of the oldest vampire coarse through her blood and change her. She had become powerful, despite her 19 years of age. And Aro realized that what he had done, had perhaps been a mistake.
The great vampires Marcus and Caius found out soon enough. Her presence was felt everywhere. What was this thing that Aro had created? What was her purpose? And why...did she still carry the sweet smell of a human? The three rulers were not sure, and before long she was exposed to the rest of the vampires living in Volterra.
To them she was an icon. She saw life differently than they. She drank only animal blood and walked to the church on dark nights. All vampires saw life after death differently. Some believed that vampires had no souls and would just...end. Other believed that only hell awaited them. But Sarai...seemed different. Her quiet nature and way of life made it seem like she never lost her soul. It made her almost human.
And before long...some lost faith in the dark ways of Aro, Marcus, and Caius. And they began to put their faith in the Lady Sarai...
